ELLSWORTH, Maine — A local 25-year-old woman was charged Wednesday with aggravated forgery after allegedly using someone else’s identity to get out of a ticket for an expired inspection sticker.
According to Ellsworth Police Detective Dotty Small, Brittany Carter was stopped by Officer Gil Jameson on Jan. 4 for an expired inspection sticker. Carter claimed she didn’t have any identification and gave the name, birthday and social security number of a family member, Small said.
When Carter failed to appear in court on the expired inspection charge, a notice was sent to the family member whose identity was allegedly used. That’s when police found out they had been duped, Small said.
The summons was served on Carter in Hancock County Jail, where she is currently serving a 15-day sentence for possession of a scheduled drug, according to a jail official. Carter is scheduled to appear on the new charge in Hancock County Superior Court on June 20.
Aggravated forgery is a Class B crime, punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a $20,000 fine.
