WINTERPORT, Maine — An 87-year old man was injured Friday morning after his tractor rolled on top of him, according to police.

The man, whose name wasn’t released, was tending his garden at his Coles Corner Road residence when he got off the tractor to move some rocks out of the way, according to Chief Deputy Jeff Trafton of the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office.

As the victim was removing the rocks, the tractor backed onto him, tangling his legs in the tiller on the back of the tractor, according to Trafton.

Deputies and rescue personnel were called to the scene around 11:45 a.m., the chief deputy said.

“They had to take the machine apart to get him free of the machine,” Trafton said. “We really don’t know yet what the extent of his injuries were.”

The man was taken by LifeFlight helicopter to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.
