PORTLAND, Maine — A 49-year-old Westbrook man who had been sought by police is dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, an official said Friday.

Westbrook police found Michael Thurston wounded on Friday morning near Route 302 in Westbrook, according to Portland City Spokeswoman Nicole Clegg.

Thurston was transported to Maine Medical Center where he died of an apparent gunshot wound, according to Clegg.

Portland police had said Thursday Thurston was wanted on charges of criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon, possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, assault, violation of a protection from abuse order and violation of bail.

Thurston had attacked his girlfriend in a Riverside Street park in Portland on Thursday morning. The victim was treated at the scene after Thurston fled.
