MILBRIDGE – Eugenie Virginia Grant, 94, passed away peacefully after a short illness, June 7, 2013. She was born Oct. 25, 1918, in Milbridge, the daughter of O.P and Geraldine Gay.
Ginny, or Gin, or Mom, or Mother, or Nana, or Grammie, as her friends and family knew her, graduated from Milbridge High School and went on to nurses training at Eastern Maine General Hospital in Bangor. She soon became a loving wife near the beginning of World War II and traveled with her husband, Gardner, to various military training centers in the northeast; during this time she became a mother of one. Virginia had hundreds of friends and would add more each year that she lived. She loved visiting her friends and relatives and entertaining them in return. Virginia was a long time officer and member of Alcyone Chapter of the Eastern Star. She headed up local cancer and heart drives. She was a long time, proud member of the Mayflower Society. Years ago she traced her roots to John Alden who sailed to this country on the Mayflower. For many years, she participated in and supported school fundraising activities and other service organizations by cooking and distributing her delicious snacks and meals to those who wanted or needed them. To this day her great-grandchildren clamor for her hot, yeast rolls. For many years she would invite and hostess family and friends to Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners at her home. Mother wore her age well and sometimes with pride and distinction.
Virginia was predeceased by her husband of 67 years, Gardner Grant; her parents, Orin and Geraldine Gay; and her brothers, Carroll and Lawrence Gay. She is survived by her two sons, Philip Grant of Birch Harbor and Wayne Grant of Cherryfield; daughter-in-law, Katherine Grant of Birch Harbor; grandchildren, Karen McLean and her husband, Chad, of Birch Harbor, Leola Carter and partner, Arron Keif, of Cheryfield, Andrea Goodell and her husband, Dan, of York and Maria Grant of Metheun, Mass.; her great-grandchildren, Kamen, Colby and Kali McLean of Birch Harbor, Savannah Carter of Cherryfield and Tim and John Goodell of York. She is also survived by her brother, Frank Gay and his wife, Barbara, of Machias; sister-in-law, Betty Gay of Spring River Lake and Lorna Gay of Cherryfield; and many nieces and nephews. Virginia was most appreciative of her good friend for years, Roberta Bayrd, who assisted her in the last weeks of her life.
A viewing will be held noon-1 p.m. Friday, June 14, at Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Home, 47 Main St., Milbridge, where funeral services will begin at 1 p.m. A committal service will be at Pine Grove Cemetery, Cherryfield. Family and friends will be gathering at her residence for a celebration of life immediately after the services. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the American Heart Association, 51 US Route 1., Suite M, Scarborough, ME 04074. Arrangements by Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Homes, Milbridge.
