WATERVILLE, Maine — A Waterville man was taken into protective custody Monday after he was threatening to commit suicide, according to police.
A crisis worker who was talking to the man on the phone notified police shortly after 1:30 p.m., according to Waterville Police Chief Joseph Massey.
Officers quickly secured the scene on Toward Street as the crisis worker tried to convince the man to put down his semiautomatic handgun and surrender to police, Massey said.
About a half an hour after police arrived, the man complied, putting the loaded gun down and surrendering to police, Massey said.
The man was taken into protective custody but was not charged with any crime, the police chief said. He was taken to MaineGeneral Hospital for treatment.
