PORTLAND, Maine — A Cumberland County Jail inmate has been charged in the wake of a fight that occurred at the facility last month.

A jail official said Mohamed Abdi, 23, will be charged with assaulting an officer.

On May 30, several jail officers responded to a fight in progress, and while breaking up the fight, Officer Tyrone Leslie was punched in the mouth by Abdi.

The fight started between two inmates over a magazine, and quickly escalated to involve eight to 10 inmates.

A quick response from corrections officers prevented the incident from getting out of control.
