ORONO, Maine — Francois G. Amar, who previously had been chair of the University of Maine’s chemistry department, has been selected as the new dean of the Honors College.

He will begin his new role Aug. 1.

Amar succeeds the late Charlie Slavin, who died in October 2012. David Gross, a part-time faculty member of the Honors College, had been serving as interim dean.

Amar has been on the UMaine faculty since 1983, serving as interim chair of the chemistry department in 1998-99 and 2005-06. He had served as the department’s chair since 2011.

He is also a member of the Maine Center for Research in Stem Education and Forest Bioproducts Research Institute.

Amar has been a member of the Honors College faculty since 2000.
