SURRY, Maine — A Trenton man is dead after a vehicle he was driving went off Route 172 and struck several large trees, according to police.

The Hancock County Sheriff’s Department said that Justin Frye, 26, of Trenton, was at the wheel of a silver 1999 Pontiac sedan when the accident occurred around 5 a.m. Sunday. The car was headed west when it went off the left side of the road when it failed to negotiate a corner, struck a dirt embankment, and then left the ground before it struck several large trees, the department indicated Monday morning in a release.

Frye sustained “massive trauma” and the vehicle is considered a total loss, police said.

The primary Investigator is Deputy Shane Campbell, assisted by deputies Jake Day, Corey Bagley and Chief Deputy Richard Bishop. Reconstruction of the accident is being completed by Deputy McFarland. The Surry Fire Department assisted at the scene.

Police said details about the possible cause were not being released as of Monday morning.
