LUBEC – Robert H. Mahlman, 73, passed away Sunday, June 30, 2013, at a Bangor health care facility. Robert was born July 11, 1939, in Lubec, to Robert and Thelma (Leighton) Mahlman.
He was educated in Lubec schools and graduated from Maine Central Institute in 1957. He was a member of Phi Eta Kappa while at the University of Maine where he earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree in government, and did advanced work in political science at Brown University. Commissioned in Army Intelligence in 1962, he served as a paratrooper with the First Special Forces Group – Airborne and as an intelligence officer with the Defense Intelligence Agency and other U.S. intelligence organizations in the Far East. He concluded his federal government service with the Veterans Administration. He was on the faculty of the University of Maryland Far East Division in Seoul and taught political science at the University of Maine, Orono. In 2004, Robert accepted an appointment to the federal Presidential Rank Review Board. Retiring to Lubec, he became a member of Post No. 65 American Legion and was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars. He served as a deacon of Lubec Congregational Christian Church and was elected chairman of the board of directors of Regional Medical Center, Lubec, where he also served as interim CEO. Robert served as chairman of Lubec Planning Board and was also elected to the town budget committee.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his loving wife, Claudia; and three aunts, Ruth Skoog, M. Faye Leighton and Gwendolyn Trecartin. Surviving are two cousins, Dennis Skoog of Calais and Deborah Dore of Houston.
