LUBEC – Joanna H. Bailey, 98, died July 25, 2013. She was born Oct. 4, 1914, in Lubec, daughter of Charles and Lydia (Boynton) Bailey.
Joanna walked to and attended school at the old East Stream Schoolhouse, Trescott, and entered Lubec Grammar School in 1921. She graduated from Lubec High School in 1933. While attending high school, Joanna clerked in local stores. After graduation, she worked for the Federal Emergency Relief Administration, at the National Reemployment Office, Eastport, and at the U.S. Corps of Army Engineers Office, Eastport, during the early construction of the later-abandoned Passamaquoddy Tidal Power Project. While working in Eastport, she commuted in all weather by boat from and to Lubec. In 1937, Joanna began working at the office of Lubec Water and Electric District, and was employed there for 42 years, retiring in 1979. During her life, Joanna’s greatest loves were friends, family, flower and vegetable gardening, ceramics, quilting, photography and travel – having visited every state except Alaska. She was a member of Christian Temple Church, where she served as treasurer and as a member of Christian Women’s Fellowship. Joanna was a member of Parkinson Vose Auxiliary of Post 3315 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Joanna was predeceased by her parents; brothers, Charles, Guy and Eugene “Roy” Bailey; niece, Beth Bailey; nephew, Eugene Bailey; and good friends, Ursula Danforth and Jim and Everene Bates. Joanna is survived by sister-in-law, Pauline Bailey of Lubec; niece, Janice Wilson and husband, Michael, of Cooper; nephew, Harold Bailey and wife, Margaret, of Lubec; and nephew, David Bailey and wife, Linda, of Hollis, N.H. Joanna’s family wishes to express their gratitude to those who, with compassion and dedication cared for her during her stays at Marshall Manor, Machias, and for the past several years at Ocean View Nursing Home, Lubec.
Services will be held at Christian Temple Church of Lubec. Internment will be at Lamson Cemetery, Lubec. There will be no visiting hours. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may donate to either Christian Temple Church; or the charity of their choice.
