FORT FAIRFIELD – Muriel B. George, 85, wife of the late Dr. Robert S. George, passed away Thursday afternoon, July 25, 2013, at a Bangor health care facility, after an extended illness. She was born June 9, 1928, in Fort Fairfield, daughter of Floyd and Katherine (McCarthy) Burtchell.
Muriel was a graduate of Fort Fairfield High School, class of 1945 and was married to Dr. Robert S. George July 11, 1949. Mrs. George was a lifelong communicant of Parish of the Precious Blood, St. Denis Catholic Church, Fort Fairfield, and also was a member of Daughters of Isabella, Santa Maria Circle Number 427, Fort Fairfield. She had also been a member of the former St. Denis School Society and served on the former Fort Fairfield Community General Hospital Guild for a number of years. Muriel’s greatest joy was spending time with her family. She especially loved the weekly Sunday gatherings where everyone enjoyed her meals. She also enjoyed playing bridge and “45” weekly with her circle of wonderful friends. In her younger years, Muriel loved to bowl, make ceramics and knitting many dishcloths, mittens and afghans.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. George was predeceased by her husband of 62 years, Robert Jan. 15, 2011; and two sisters, Phyllis Miller and Betty Rondinone. She is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law who dearly loved her, Pamela and Robert Osterblom, Susan and Charles Russell, all of Fort Fairfield, and Nancy and Clifton Smith of Centreville, New Brunswick, Canada; six treasured grandchildren and spouses, Bobby Russell, Paul Osterblom, David and Brandy Osterblom, Kathy Russell, all of Fort Fairfield, Cliff and Ashley Smith of Centreville, New Brunswick, and Sara and Jim Pryde of Florenceville, New Brunswick; five adored great-grandchildren, Brendan and Brianna Osterblom of Fort Fairfield, Tucker and Sawyer Smith of Centreville, New Brunswick, and Sophia Pryde of Florenceville, New Brunswick; and several nieces and nephews. Muriel’s family wishes to express their sincere and heartfelt gratitude to the entire staff at The Aroostook Medical Center, the staff of Mars Hill Nursing Home and Eastern Maine Medical Center during her illness.
Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Sunday, July 28, at Giberson-Dorsey Funeral Home, 144 Main St., Fort Fairfield. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 2 p.m. Monday, July 29, at Parish of the Precious Blood, St. Denis Catholic Church, 147 Main St., Fort Fairfield, with Father Jean-Paul Labrie, celebrant. Interment will take place after the Mass at St. Denis Catholic Cemetery, Fort Fairfield. A time of continued fellowship with refreshments will be held after the interment service at Knights of Columbus Hall Council Number 1753, 260 Main St., Fort Fairfield.
