AUGUSTA, Maine — A garage at an abandoned home on State Street was destroyed by fire on Tuesday morning, and officials are attempting to determine a cause.

Augusta Fire Chief Roger Audette said the state fire marshal’s office has not determined a cause of the blaze that broke out at 2:15 a.m. Tuesday.

“It’s 2 in the morning at a vacant building so anytime those scenarios come into play we really need to try to figure out what happened there,” Audette said.

The vacant house, which hasn’t been lived in for at least 6 years, was spared while the garage was leveled, Audette said. Firefighters from Gardiner and Togus VA hospital assisted at the scene.

Audette said investigators are seeking to talk to neighbors and witnesses in case “they saw anything out of the ordinary.”

No valuables were lost in the fire, Audette said. The blaze was under control in about an hour.
