YORK – Diana (Di) R. (McAlary) Hicks, 68 of York, PA died Sunday, August 18, 2013, at hospice care after a brave battle with cancer. She was the wife of Anthony L. Hicks. Diana was born on March 22, 1945 in Rockland, ME and raised in Bangor. She was the daughter of the late Frederick B. McAlary, an employee of the BDN from 1945 – 1985, and Josephine P. McAlary of Rockport, ME who was a teacher for Bangor public schools from 1963 – 1985. Di was a 1963 graduate of Bangor High School, 1965 graduate of Westbrook College in Portland, ME and 1966 graduate of Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School in Boston, MA. After a few relocations Di spent 21 years in Cherry Hill, NJ before establishing her final residence in York in 1996. In addition to her husband of 47 years and her mother, Di is survived a brother Frederick B. McAlary, Jr. and his wife Mary and nephew Ryan McAlary of Andover, MA.; a son, Andrew L. Hicks, his wife Karen, and grandchildren Kelly, Amelia and Kyle of West Chester, PA.; and a daughter Jennifer D. Hicks, her husband Thomas Briggs, and grandchildren Tyler and Wyatt of Chestertown, MD. She was predeceased by grandson Andrew L. Hicks, Jr. in 2010. In addition, she considered and treated many of her dear friends in her life as family, some whom she had known since her childhood and others whom she had known and loved as her own since their childhood.
A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday August 24 at 10am at St. John the Baptist Episcopal Church, 140 Beaver Street, York, PA. A reception with family and friends will immediately follow the service. A graveside service will be scheduled for a later date at Seaview Cemetery, Rockport, ME. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice & Community Care, Lancaster, PA.
