CORINTH – Phoebe J. (Speed) Pitts Wood, 89, wife of the late Robert G. Wood, passed away peacefully Aug. 19, 2013 at Emilio Estates. She was born July 31, 1924, in Corinth, a daughter of Arthur and Mattie (Gray) Speed.
She graduated from East Corinth Academy and from Bangor School of Commerce, Class of 1944, where she was secretary to the principal of the school. Phoebe also worked at Red Cross in Bangor. She moved to Fairfax, Va., where she worked her way up to be the vice president of a bank in Washington, D.C. Following the death of her second husband, Commander Robert C. Wood in 2008, she moved to Maine in 2009 to live with her very special niece, Catherine and husband, Vaughn Cummings, Sr. Phoebe attended the Fairfax Baptist Temple in Virginia and Cornerstone Baptist Church in Exeter. She loved crossword puzzles, playing bridge, traveling and playing her organ.
In addition to her niece and husband, she is survived by a sister-in-law, Winifred Speed; a niece, several nephews, and cousins. Phoebe was predeceased by husbands, Vernon Pitts in 1971 and Robert Wood; sisters, Hazel McKusick, Dorothy Henderson, and infant sister, Phyllis; brothers, A. Elwyn and Gerald Speed.
