BELFAST – Alice Ernestine (Nelson) Carrick, 97, died Aug. 25, 2013, at Tall Pines Nursing Facility, Belfast. She was born Feb. 17, 1916, in Port Tampa City, Fla., to Alice and Ernest Nelson.
She graduated from Plant High School in Tampa, attended Tampa Business College, and worked for a time at the Tampa Wholesale Liquor Commission. Afterwards, she worked for the Department of Agriculture of the State of Florida at various locations throughout the state. In 1943, she joined the U.S. Navy as a WAVE, where she served as Yeoman to the Executive Officer during World War II at Banana River Naval Air Station. While stationed there, she met John Carrick, fell in love, and the two were married in 1946. Upon their discharge from the Navy, they moved to Detroit, Mich., where their son, John J. Carrick III was born. Her husband worked for the City of Detroit and Alice became a homemaker, working occasionally for the Detroit Election Board. In addition, she was the treasurer of Hillcrest United Methodist Church. In 1979, when John retired, they moved back to Tampa, Fla., living in the home where Alice was raised and where they were united in marriage. For many years, she served as treasurer for the Port Tampa United Methodist Church. In 2007, in their early 90s, they moved to Belfast, to be near family.
John predeceased her in 2008.
Mrs. Carrick is survived by her son, John III and his wife, Pat; two grandsons, Jeffrey Ryan Carrick of Michigan and John Carrick IV of South Carolina and his wife, Jennifer; and a great-grandson, John Carrick V.
A memorial service will be held at a later date in Tampa, Fla. Memorial donations may be made to Port Tampa United Methodist Church, 6914 S. DeSoto St., Tampa, FL 33616. Arrangements are under the care of Riposta Funeral Home, 182 Waldo Ave., Belfast.
