STETSON – Ruth I. Pelkey, 64, died unexpectedly Aug. 31, 2013 at a Pittsfield hospital following a long period of ill health. Ruth was born in Belfast, Sept. 29, 1948, the daughter of Amasa and Elsie (Leach) Hatch.
She was brought up on Islesboro and graduated from Camden High School. Following high school she attended and graduated from the University of Maine, Orono, with a bachelor’s degree in Child Physiology. Ruth married Richard L. Pelkey Sr., in Bangor, Oct. 26, 1974. Ruth owned and operated “Ruth’s Cut and Curl” from her home in Stetson for several years. She was a foster parent raising seven children. She enjoyed gardening, tending to her flowers and her vegetable gardens.
She is survived by her husband of 38 years, Richard L. Pelkey Sr. of Stetson, three sons and their wives, Richard and Jodi Pelkey Jr. of Chanute, Kan., Ronald and Lisa Pelkey of Stetson, Brian and Nicole Pelkey of Bradley, one daughter and her husband, Linda and John Manno of Chicopee, Mass., two brothers and their wives, Stephen and Pat Hatch of Ky., Robert and Martha Hatch of Plymouth, one sister Brenda Rivers of Lakewood, Fla., sister-in-law, Frances Hatch of Carmel, 11 grandchildren, Joseph Pelkey, Jacob Pelkey, Christopher Pelkey, Amanda Pelkey, Nicholas Manno, Nathan Manno, Ariella Manno, Bradley Pelkey, Brandon Pelkey, Alexis Wagner, Kayleigh Wagner; several nieces and nephews. Ruth was predeceased by her son, Daniel Norris; granddaughter, Amber Manno, and her brother, David Hatch.
Friends may call 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Sept 5, at Brown Funeral Home and Cremation Service Center, 34 High St., Newport. Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 6, at the Brown Funeral Home, with Rev. David Ray officiating.
