SHAPLEIGH, Maine — Two youths were injured late Monday in a one-vehicle accident on Route 11 in York County, police said.
The vehicle was traveling on roadways made wet by heavy rain, according to Chief Deputy William King of the York County Sheriff’s Office, and witnesses said the vehicle left the road for no apparent reason.
The names of the occupants and their ages were not released.
The vehicle struck a utility pole after it spun out, trapping the youths inside, according to King, forcing responders to extricate both of them from the vehicle.
A LifeFlight helicopter was requested but it could not take off because of the weather, the chief deputy said. Both occupants were taken to Goodall Hospital and the passenger, who suffered serious head and chest injuries, was later brought to Maine Medical Center.
The passenger is listed in critical condition while the driver was treated and released.
Police anticipate no charges in connection with the crash.
