SCARBOROUGH – Mavis (Crouse) Niles, 90, of Portland, passed away Oct. 23, 2013. The daughter of Fred W. and Nadine (Crockett) Crouse, she was born March 23, 1923, in Caribou.
While in high school Mavis met her husband Leland “Pete” Fenton Niles, and they were married on May 6, 1946. They lived in Presque Isle for many years before moving to Portland in the 1960s. As a single woman she worked as a telephone operator, and then in the 1980s she became a floor manager at Bradley’s Department Store in Westbrook.
She was predeceased by her husband, Pete on Aug. 15, 1984; and by her daughter, Kathy Mae Niles on April 14, 1973. She is survived by her daughter, Darla J. Cote of Nottingham N.H., and her son, Timothy W. Niles and his wife, Maureen, of Raymond; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; her sister, Virginia Nelson; two brothers, Darrell, and Terry Crouse; and several nieces and nephews.
Family and friends are invited to attend a time of visitation 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 29, at Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St., Portland. A light luncheon will be served. A funeral service will take place 1 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery.
