STOCKTON SPRINGS – Joseph Eugene Pomeroy, 94, of Stockton Springs, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, Oct. 25, 2013, surrounded by his family. Born on Nov. 21, 1918, in Stockton Springs, he was the son of Eugene Pomeroy and Myrtilla (Harriman) Pomeroy.
Joe spent most of his life in the Navy and sailing as a Merchant Marine. He was proud of the fact that he had been around the World twice. In later years he worked as a commercial fisherman and would take his children with him to teach them the trade. Joe wintered for many years in St. Petersburg, Fla. He enjoyed having company visit and would spend his time talking and laughing. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge.
Joe is survived by 12 children, Alan Bennett of Nebraska, Lorraine Swindell and her husband, James, of Washington State, Ellery Pomeroy and his wife, Kathy, of Searsport, Catherine Stevens of Searsport, Barbara Pomeroy and her partner, Richard Johnson, of Searsport, Marion Gomm and her husband, Mark, of Prospect, Raymond Pomeroy and his partner, Edie Mathews, of Swanville, Audrey Pomeroy of Searsport, Elizabeth Harvey and her husband, James, of Frankfort, Vicki Pomeroy and her partner, Folton Gross, of Searsport, Frances Pomeroy and her fiancé, Thomas Harvey, of Bucksport, and Ricky Pomeroy and his wife, Barbara, of Belfast; along with hundreds of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Shirley Robbins of Stockton Springs; a sister-in-law, Lois Hall of Stockton Springs; several nieces and nephews; and many friends. A companion of 11 years, Mable. Joe was predeceased by his wife of 31 years, Loretta (Campbell) Pomeroy in 1973; two sons, Dean Bennett and Eugene Pomeroy; one daughter, Loana Reed; two great-grandsons, Kavin and David; and his parents.
Donations preferred to Full Gospel Church of Searsport, 71 E. Main St., Searsport, ME 04974. Visiting hours will be held noon-2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 4, with the funeral to follow at 2 p.m. at Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home, 28 Elm St., Bucksport. Burial will be at Mount Prospect Cemetery, Stockton Springs.
