BELFAST, Maine — Incumbent Mayor Walter Ash will spend another two-year term wielding the gavel at Belfast City Hall, after winning the three-way election Tuesday with comfortable margins. Preliminary returns show he received 952 votes to challengers Jim O’Connor’s 523 and Thomas Burpee’s 100.

Residents also voted for two three-year positions on the Regional School Unit 20 board of directors. They chose Caitlin Hills, with 784 votes, and Charlie Grey, with 738 votes. Christopher Hyk trailed with only 475 votes.

Altogether, 1,609 Belfast residents voted in the municipal election, with a steady stream of people coming in to the city’s two polling places all day long, according to election workers. The community has about 4,500 registered voters.

“This is a pretty good turnout for a municipal ballot,” Denise Hylton, deputy registrar of voters, said.
