BELFAST, Maine — A man is in police custody after a pickup football game this weekend at a Marsh Road home reportedly went criminally awry.

James Thomas, 19, had been playing football with a group of friends Saturday afternoon when they got into an argument, Belfast Police Chief Mike McFadden said Tuesday.

“It got physical. There was some wrestling going on. Some punches were thrown,” McFadden said. “Mr. Thomas was so angry that he went home, got a knife, came back to the field and threatened some of the people.”

A police officer arrested Thomas, charging him with criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon, after one of the players made an emergency call.

On Tuesday, Thomas remained in custody, with his bail set at $1,000, according to a jail official.
