LIMESTONE, Maine — The Aroostook National Wildlife Refuge will be bustling with activity this weekend as its Friends group hosts a two-day open house as part of its Second Saturday series.
The annual event was scheduled during National Wildlife Refuge, Oct. 13-19, but was postponed because the refuge was closed last month because of the federal government shutdown.
Instead, the open house was moved to 10 a.m.-3 p.m Saturday and noon-4 p.m. Sunday. The event was extended to include Sunday in honor of Veterans’ Day.
The open house will feature an opportunity for folks to take auto tours through the weapons storage area, down a paved road usually prohibited to vehicles.
Friends members will have maps available for self-guided tours, but they’re also hoping to have former Loring Air Force Base personnel available to provide guided tours of the facilities, which used to house nuclear weapons components.
There also will be games for children and free supplies to build your own first-aid kit.
