ELLSWORTH – Wayne R. Dennison, 89, died Nov. 12, 2013, at home in Ellsworth. He was born Aug. 21, 1924, in East Machias, the son of Roy K. Dennison and Wenona (Ward) Dennison.
Wayne graduated from Washington Academy, class of 1942. Following graduation he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II as a Ball Turret Operator on B-17 Flying Fortresses , assigned to the crew of ” The Sherrif’s Posse.” He was the last surviving member of that crew. Wayne returned from England to marry his sweetheart, Winona Mitchell of Harrington, to whom he was married for 66 years, until her death in 2012. They both attended and graduated from Washington State Teachers College. They lived in east Machias, Howland, Surry, and then settled in Ellsworth. Wayne was Principal of the Bryant Moore School in Ellsworth. Wayne was a member of Ellsworth’s First Congregational Church and a member of the 91st Bomb Group Memorial Assn. After his retirement Wayne enjoyed camping, boating, woodworking projects, and numerous other hobbies.
Wayne is survived by his three children, John W. Dennison of Bridgton, James W. Dennison of Bar Harbor, and Jane (Dennison) Butler of Bar Harbor; four grandchildren, Sarah W. Dennison, Joshua E. Dennison, Emily Butler, and Christopher Butler; and one God grandson, Johnny Osuna.
A Memorial service will be held at the First Congregational Church in Ellsworth at 1:00 pm on Friday , November 15.
