ELLSWORTH, Maine — A local man was charged for leaving the scene of a property damage accident on Wednesday after he hit a tree and a mailbox in Hancock, according to police.
Ghobad Vermazani, 47, damaged the passenger side of his car in the process and then drove on to Ellsworth, state Trooper Chris Smith said.
Police had received reports that a much more serious situation was underway but those reports turned out to be false, Smith said.
One caller reported that the man who police later determined was Vermazani hit a passenger in his car while he was driving. Another caller reported that Vermanzani had forced her and another woman into the car and that he was driving under the influence.
As a result of those calls and where the alleged activity was occurring, state police contacted Hancock Elementary School, which went on a precautionary lockdown.
Smith said he later found no evidence that Vermazani assaulted anyone. The trooper also determined that information provided by the second caller was inaccurate. Smith added that Vermazani took a breath test, which indicated that he was not impaired.
The trooper, however, did find that Vermazani hit the tree and mailbox, and summoned him for leaving the scene.
“It was a big, convoluted fiasco,” Smith said. “No one is more frustrated than me.”
