DEER ISLE – On Nov. 13, 2013, Mary Alysse Sigmund passed away peacefully at her home on Deer Isle, surrounded by family and friends and in the company of her beloved pets.
Born Aug. 9, 1923, in Watsonville, Calif., to Anastasia Speckins and George Sill, Mary Alysse married a Kansas attorney, Lawrence Martin Sigmund, in 1945 and moved to Wichita, Kan., where she raised two children. When her husband retired from the Veterans Administration, they bought a farm in southeast Kansas where they raised Angus cattle and grew pecans for more than thirty years. Following her husband’s death in 2007, Mary Alysse moved to Deer Isle to be with her daughter, Anne. Mary Alysse had a passion for life overcoming polio at the age of three and surviving through sheer dint of will a series of major illness that followed as a result. Quick to laugh and with bright blue eyes that sparkled, she was noted for her generous and compassionate spirit. Mary Alysse was a passionate quilter whose hand-stitched quilts which often featured embroidered elements were highly valued for their artistry. She was an avid stamp collector and enjoyed both crossword puzzles and jigsaw puzzles. She was never without a book at her side. She loved to travel and her trips ranged from Russia and Europe to Mexico and Central America.
Mary Alysse was predeceased by her husband; and her son, Michael. She is survived by her daughter, Anne with whom she lived.
At Mary Alysse’s request there will be a funeral Mass 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 18, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Stonington, with Father Bruce Siket officiating. There will be no visitation and her interment will be private. However, if friends and family wish to donate in her memory, she asked that those donations be made to the Deer Isle non-profit of their choice.
