STANDISH, Maine — Victoria McIntyre hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to lift the Husson University Eagles by the Saint Joseph’s College Monks 69-68 in women’s basketball action Thursday night.

McIntyre buried the winning shot off an assist from Chandler Guerette seven seconds after Mackenzie Dufour hit a free throw to give St. Joe’s a 68-66 lead.

Husson took a 31-25 lead at the end of the first half, but St. Joe’s rallied to tie it six minutes into the second half and the two teams battled evenly through most of the half with St. Joe’s taking a 67-64 lead with 24 seconds left when Lindsay Moore sank one of two free throws.

A Guerette layup with 10 seconds left cut it 67-66, setting the stage for McIntyre’s winning shot.

Guerette paced Husson (2-1) of Bangor with 20 points and three assists. Amanda Johnson chipped in with 13 points and McIntyre finished with 10.

Morgan Cahill scored 22 points to lead St. Joe’s (2-2) while Lindsay Moore contributed 15 points and 10 rebounds. Abby Young chipped in with seven points, nine rebounds and three assists.

Bates 84, UMF 60

At Farmington, Bates put four players in double figures to earn the victory.

Allaina Murphy went 8-of-14 from the floor on her way to a game-high 20 points, and hauled down eight rebounds. Meredith Kelly tacked on 18 points, while Chelsea Nason and Kristin Calvo each finished with 12.

UMF sophomore Ayla Allen finished with a career-high 17 points. Sophomore forward Elizabeth Ferry finished with 13 points, while junior guard Lindsay Ranquist added 12 points and eight rebounds.

Nine straight points by the Bobcats, led by a Nason 3-pointer at the 6:46 mark, broke the game open. Bernadette Connors’ layup for Bates with 4:53 remaining stretched the Bobcat lead to 37-26 and Bates held a 40-29 lead at the break.

Men’s Basketball

Husson 67, St. Joe’s 63

At Standish, the Eagles used a balanced scoring attack to open the season with their third straight win.

Phil Leighton and Donte Cottonham each scored 11 points for the Eagles of Bangor and Raheem Anderson put in nine, Trevon Butler and Aaron Willis added eight each and Jacob Moore had seven.

Moore also grabbed nine rebounds for Husson and Willis had five assists.

Zach Blodgett paced St. Joe’s (1-1) with 16 points and Nich Jobin put in 15. Matt Medeiros added 13 points and seven rebounds.

The Monks scored 12 unanswered points to jump out to a 12-0 lead early in the first half.

Husson fought from behind during most of the game, but made key shots, jumping ahead in the final five minutes of the game when Willis made a layup to put the Eagles up 60-58.

Husson held on to the lead for the remainder of the game.

Northeastern 63, Georgetown 56

Reggie Spencer had 18 points and nine rebounds as the Huskies rallied from a 14-point second half deficit to shock the Hoyas on the opening day of the Puerto Rico Tip-Off.

Scott Eatherton added 12 points and 10 rebounds and David Walker also finished with 12 points for Northeastern (2-2), which will meet Charlotte in the second round. T.J. Williams contributed 10 points off the bench for the Huskies.

D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera scored 14 points, the only player in double figures for Georgetown (1-2). Josh Smith and Markel Starks added nine points each for the Hoyas, who shot 23 percent from the floor in the second half.

Georgetown went nearly six minutes without a field goal in the second half, allowing Northeastern to go on a 14-0 run and tie the score at 40 with 11:53 remaining. Northeastern took its first lead of the game at 48-46, fell behind by three again and closed the game in a 7-0 run.

UMass 96, Nebraska 90

Derrick Gordon scored 20 points to crack double figures for the first time since transferring from Western Kentucky and the Minutemen held on to defeat the Cornhuskers at the Charleston Classic.

Sampson Carter added 16 points and Cady Lalanne continued his strong start with 15 for UMass (4-0), which advances to face No. 20 New Mexico in the semifinals. The Minutemen had six players in double figures for the first time since Nov. 25, 2006.

Texas Tech transfer Terran Petteway kept Nebraska in the game, tallying a career-high 28 before fouling out late in the second half. Tai Webster, Leslee Smith and David Rivers added 12 points apiece for the Cornhuskers (3-1), who will meet Alabama-Birmingham in the losers’ bracket Friday.

UMass used a 14-3 run to grab an eight-point lead with 5:58 to play in the first half, but Petteway engineered a 13-4 run with eight straight Nebraska points. Petteway had 17 in the first half, but UMass led 42-39 at the break.
