DEXTER – Carolyn Louise (Powell) Roach, 93, died peacefully on Nov. 24, 2013, at Tissue’s Country Estates, Athens, Maine. She was born Feb. 5, 1920, in Jamaica, Queens, New York, the daughter of Harry L. and Cornelia A. (Eldert) Powell.
She graduated from The Katherine Gibbs School in New York City in 1937. On Dec. 16, 1939, she married Edwin H. Roach and they resided in White Plains, N.Y. She worked for several years as the office manager of the nursery school at Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, N.Y., until moving to Middletown Springs, Vt., in 1973. She then worked at Castleton State College in Castleton, Vt., as the office manager of the humanities department until her retirement in 1981.
Carolyn was a Cub Scout and Girl Scout leader in Valhalla, N.Y. She served as president of the Garden Club of Middletown Springs, Vt., and was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution in the Vermont and Bangor chapters. Carolyn was a long-time member of Valhalla United Methodist Church in Valhalla, N.Y., and Middletown Springs Community Church, Middletown Springs, Vt. She attended the Essex Street Methodist Church while living in Bangor. She enjoyed gardening, reading, oil painting, traveling with her husband, and was very interested in her family’s history as one of the earliest Dutch families who settled on Long Island, N.Y., in the 1600s.
She is survived by a son, Richard Roach and his wife, Beverly, of Youngstown, N.Y.; a daughter, Sally Larrabee and her husband, Michael, of Dexter; three grandsons, David Roach and his wife, Irina, of Castro Valley, Calif., Trevor Larrabee of Dexter, and Jeffrey Larrabee of Dexter; two granddaughters, Christianne Roach of Minneapolis, and Rosanne Gould and her husband, Jason, of St. Albans; two great-grandsons, Alexander Roach of Castro Valley, Calif., and Calvin Gould of St. Albans; and a great-granddaughter, Nikita Roach of Castro Valley, Calif. Carolyn was predeceased by her husband, Edwin H. Roach; a brother, Richard Powell; and a sister, Mary Jane Mikkelsen.
At the request of the family, there will be no visitation or funeral service at this time. A memorial service and burial will take place in Middletown Springs, Vt., in the Spring. In lieu of flowers, friends wishing to may make donations in Carolyn’s memory to Tissue’s Country Estates Activity Fund, 212 Fox Hill Road, Athens, ME 04912. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Dan and Scott’s Cremation and Funeral Service, 445 Waterville Road, Skowhegan.
