Freezing fun
BANGOR — Challenger Learning Center will host Vacation Camp: Science of the Season 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday, Dec. 30, at the center, 30 Venture Way.
Campers will explore what happens when things freeze, thaw, expand and contract. The cost is $50 and includes a snack is morning and afternoon. Bring a bag lunch.

Holiday fair
BANGOR — Amicus will hold its annual Holiday Craft Fair 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6, at Penobscot Valley Industries and Ralph Leek Elders, 68 Hillside Ave., and at The Bouchea
Center and Community Life, 96 Thirteenth St.
Penobscot Valley Industries and Ralph Leek Elders featured items will include tabletop decorations and centerpieces, paper wreaths and trees, candle lamps, paint brush and muffin tin snowmen, necklaces, scarves, book trees and snow globes crafted by RLE artists. The RLE bakers will offer baked goods, candy, breads, magic bars and heath bars.
The RLE sewing group has designed items that include teacup pin cushions, silverware stockings for the holiday table, snowmen ornaments, and hot water bottle covers.
The PVI artists have created hand-painted, sculptured snowflakes and stars, bird ornaments, customized art wrapping paper and tags, candles, snowmen ornaments, custom designed holiday tree ornaments, wreaths, holiday crafts, and baskets from the garden including herbal soap, sachets and potpourri.
PVI calendars with the featured art of the PVI artists will be available for purchase.
Orders will be taken for the PVI Yearbook. PVI holiday grab bags will include an assortment of ornaments art magnets, and gift tags.
PVI will conduct a holiday gift collection raffle for the benefit of the Cindy Davis Memorial Special Olympic scholarship fund.
The Bouchea Center has created a multitude of Christmas ornaments, crafts, holiday signs, baked goods, wreaths and centerpieces of fresh Maine fir. The Bouchea Center will hold a raffle for a queen-size quilt. Community Life will feature New England Patriot themed crafts, handmade crafts and homemade doggie treats.
Appy Hour
BANGOR — Bangor Public Library will host Appy Hour at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 9, in the Lecture Hall. The program will focus on what apps are, discuss what types of apps are available, demonstrate how apps are downloaded and will showcase a handful of educational and leisure apps.
The program will focus on apps for the iPad and the Samsung Galaxy, but should be informative to anyone looking for more information about apps in general, organizers of the event said.
This event is free and open to all. Everyone is encouraged to attend and invited to bring a tablet or smartphone and to ask any questions they may have.
Successful pet food drive
BANGOR — A pet food drive to benefit Eastern Area Agency on Aging’s Furry Friends Food Bank collected more than 2,000 pet food items, donated by approximately 133 people, on Nov. 23.
The pet food drive was a collaboration between employees at Bangor Police Department and Shaw’s supermarket, which hosted to the event.
The Eastern Area Agency on Aging’s Furry Friends Food Bank provides pet food to 439 low income and-or homebound senior citizens and adults with disabilities in four counties.
Eleven Bangor Police Department employees and some of their families volunteered their time at the event.
Tree lighting ceremony
HAMPDEN — A Christmas tree lighting ceremony sponsored by the Hampden Kiwanis Club, will be held 4:30-5:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 8, at the Hampden Town Office, Western Avenue.
Sing Christmas carols, enjoy refreshments and visit with Santa Claus.
UMaine hockey raffle
ORONO — The Friends of Maine Hockey are conducting a “Best Seat in the House” Raffle.
Prizes are a recliner donated by Stonington’s Furniture; a prize package that gives the winner the opportunity to watch UMaine play the University of New Brunswick live on Jan. 21 while seated in an Alfond Arena Skybox, and includes 12 game tickets and parking passes; and the opportunity for two to travel with the UMaine Men’s Ice Hockey team to Lowell and Boston College on Jan. 17-18 and includes all activities with the men’s hockey team — travel on the team bus, stay at the team hotel, eat team meals, sit in on team meetings, enjoy skybox tickets at Lowell and great seats at BC.
Youths in grades nine through 12 are not eligible to participate in the skybox or fan experience prizes.
Raffle tickets are $10 each and available from any Friends of Maine Hockey board member, at the UMaine men’s ice hockey office and Stonington’s Furniture in Brewer. Tickets will also be sold at home hockey games in the lobby and at the Center Ice Welcome Table.
