Boston to host 2015 NCAA men’s hockey Frozen Four

While three future NCAA Frozen Four sites announced Wednesday have hosted the tournament before, one city will be a first-time host.

Wednesday afternoon, the NCAA confirmed the 2015 men’s ice hockey championships will be decided at TD Garden in Boston.

The 2016 Frozen Four will be at the Tampa Bay Times Forum in Florida, the 2017 event at the United Center in Chicago and the 2018 championships at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minn.

Chicago has never hosted the Frozen Four. The 2014 championships will be held in Philadelphia.

TD Garden last hosted the Frozen Four in 2004, which also marked the last time the University of Maine played for a national title, falling 1-0 to Denver.

Tampa last played host to the Frozen Four in 2012 and St. Paul in 2011.

Other cities the NCAA reportedly considered were Washington, D.C., Columbus, Ohio, Pittsburgh and Brooklyn, N.Y.

Redskins’ Griffin shut down for rest of season

WASHINGTON — Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III said Wednesday that Coach Mike Shanahan has decided to shut him down with three games remaining in his second NFL season. The Redskins plan to start Kirk Cousins at quarterback Sunday at Atlanta.

In speaking to reporters at Redskins Park, Griffin expressed disappointment with Shanahan’s decision and said he “expressed my desire to play.”

“At this point, I have to leave it up to Coach which it always is,” said Griffin, who said he would support Cousins in whatever way he could.

With Griffin deactivated, Rex Grossman is expected to take over as the second-string quarterback. Cousins practiced with the starting offense during the portion of the Redskins’ workout Wednesday that was open to media members. Grossman followed Cousins and Griffin did not take part.

Broncos’ Welker to miss Thursday’s game

EditorsNote: updates with Welker officially out Broncos’ Welker to miss Thursday game

The Denver Broncos will be without wide receiver Wes Welker for their AFC West matchup with the San Diego Chargers on Thursday night.

Welker will miss the game because of a concussion that he suffered in Sunday’s 51-28 win over the Tennessee Titans on a hit by safety George Wilson, the Broncos announced Wednesday.

It was Welker’s second concussion within the past month. The first came in a game against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 11, but he returned the following week to play against New England.

Because of the short practice week resulting from the Thursday night game, Welker had less time to pass the NFL’s concussion protocol tests for clearance to play against the Chargers.

The 32-year-old Welker is the Broncos’ second-leading receiver this season with 73 catches for 778 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Hairston Jr. retires to join Dodgers’ broadcast crew

Jerry Hairston Jr. announced his retirement Wednesday, following a 16-year major league career, and will apparently join the Los Angeles Dodgers’ new television channel.

“After 16 seasons decided retiring is my best opportunity,” Hairston wrote on his Twitter account. “Game will not miss me but I will miss it and teammates immensely!”

Hairston was a versatile player, spending time at every position except pitcher and catcher. Over 1,442 major league games, he hit .257 with 70 home runs, 420 RBIs and 147 stolen bases. For the Dodgers last season, he hit .211 with two homers and 22 RBIs in 204 at-bats.

Senators’ Cowen suspended two games for hit

Ottawa Senators defenseman Jared Cowen was suspended two games without pay by the NHL for an illegal check to the head of Buffalo Sabres forward Zemgus Girgensons during Tuesday night’s game.

Cowen was not called for a penalty on the play, which occurred at 18:03 of the third period when Cowen clipped Girgensons’ head with a shoulder. Girgensons remained in the game, which the Sabres won 2-1 in a shootout.

Cowen will lose $31.794.88 based on his average annual salary as a result of the suspension.

In 31 games this season, Cowen has three goals and three assists. He will sit out a rematch against the Sabres on Thursday night and Saturday’s game against the Los Angeles Kings.
