HERMON, Maine — A single-car accident caused a utility pole to snap, knocked out power and shut down Union Street near the Bangor line Friday night.

No one was injured, according to the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office.

A small four-door sedan driven by John Davis, age unknown, of Bangor was traveling east on Union Street at about 6:30 p.m. When he hit a patch of slush on the road, Davis lost control, crossed the center line and his vehicle snapped a utility on the opposite side of the road, Deputy David Quinn said at about 8:30 p.m. Friday.

Union Street was shut down for about 45 minutes, and traffic was diverted on Davis and Billings roads, the deputy said. After that, Union Street was down to one lane as the pole was replaced.

As of 9 p.m., power was out to about 18 residences and businesses on Union Street, Alard Drive and Lilac Lane, according to Bangor Hydro Electric Co.’s website. Power was expected to be restored by 10:15 p.m.

Quinn said that Davis, who was not issued any tickets, was driving too fast for road conditions.
