WINTHROP – Winthrop – Charlotte Jackson (Johnson) Ames, 94, formerly of Pittsfield, died peacefully on Sunday, Dec. 22, 2013, in Augusta. Charlotte was born Oct. 24, 1919, in Dexter, the daughter of John and Julia (Littlefield) Jackson.
She received her teaching certificate from Farmington Normal School and went on to receive her Bachelor’s degree from the University of Maine in Orono. Charlotte was an avid reader and almost always had a book in hand. She enjoyed playing cards and could be very competitive. She liked attending the many school sport activities and was a well known and respected teacher in Dexter, Corinna and Fairfield. She loved being with her family and many in the community referred to her as mother. She was a woman who loved to give of herself. She had been a volunteer at both the Pittsfield Library and the Sebasticook Valley Hospital. She was a member of the Past Noble Grand, the Rebekah’s of Corinna, the Tuesday Club and the Retired Teachers’ Association. She will be lovingly missed and remembered.
She is survived by her two daughters, Joanne A. Buzzell and her husband, Kenneth, of Newport and Judith J. Lane of Winthrop; four stepsons, Dwayne Ames and wife, Sheila, of Pittsfield, Van Ames and wife, Jennifer, of Skowhegan, Kevin Ames and wife, Trudi, of Pittsfield and Michael Ames and wife, Ellen, of Pittsfield; stepdaughter, Sharon Goepner and husband, Alan, of Pittsfield; grandchildren, Heather Micue, Ronald Micue, Felancy Grant and husband, Robert, Gwen Libby and husband, David, Jackie, Jeremy and Jennifer Lane, Lee Ames, Darcy Ames, Van Ames Jr., Alan Kennedy, Meagan Ames, Josh Ames, Jessica Almeida and husband, Matthew, and Jon McNeil; 14 great-grandchildren; brother, John Harmon of Oregon; brother-in-law, Alvin Drusendahl; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her first husband, Ronald C. Johnson; her second husband, Maynard Ames; daughter, Janie J. Buzzell; granddaughter, Tracy Nash; sister, Gertrude Drusendahl; and extended family members, Norman E. Jackson, Howard Jackson and Laurice Harmon.
The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 26, at Shorey-Nichols Funeral Home, 191 Hartland Ave., Pittsfield. A funeral service will be held 3 p.m. Friday, Dec. 27, at the funeral home. Interment will be in the spring at Maplewood Cemetery, Maple Street, Fairfield. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1 Bowdoin Mill Island, Topsham, ME 04086, on behalf of Charlotte’s daughter, Janie.
