OLD TOWN – Ruth Mabel Young, 90, died peacefully Dec. 18, 2013 at her residence. She was born Oct. 8, 1923, in Milford, a daughter of Charles Edwin and Beaulah (Brawn) Johnston.
Ruth was a 1942 graduate of Old Town High School. On Aug. 16, 1942, she married her high school sweetheart, Edwin O. Young, in the Milford Congregational Church. Ruthie enjoyed shopping, was an avid reader, and loved to follow politics. She especially enjoyed time spent with family with summers at the camp at Pushaw Lake, the many Florida vacations, following retirement the 20 years spent wintering in Florida. She was a Brownie Girl Scout Leader, and a member of the Old Town Women’s Club. She was a loving a devoted wife and mother, and Mimi to all grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband of 71 years, Edwin, son, Jeffrey E. Young and wife, Jan of St. Albans, Vt., Cynthia Young-Dupuis and her husband, Tim of Old Town; five grandchildren, Jeffrey “Jay” Young II of Fort Worth, Texas, Jonathan Young and his wife, Ginny of Fort Worth, Texas, Danny Emerson and his fiancée, Tammy of Milford; Samantha Emerson of Old Town, Jennifer Reed and her husband, Chris of Bangor, and Shelley Young of St. Albans, Vt.; 10 great-grandchildren, Aaron, Hunter, Hudson and Harper Young, Brandon Emerson, Breanne “Breezy” Newell, Brooke Myers, Nicholas Reed, Colby and Devan Beal; two great-great-grandchildren, Callie Carlow and Tucker Young; a sister, Clara Currier of Howland, special niece, Corinne Smith, special friend, Ginny Fortier. She was predeceased two brothers, Fay and Arthur Johnston.
A celebration of her life will be held 1-4 p.m. Saturday at Birmingham Funeral Home with a service at 4 p.m. Spring burial will be at Lawndale Cemetery, Old Town.
