INDIAN TOWNSHIP, Maine — A woman whose house sustained minor damage in a New Year’s Day fire in Washington County has been charged with arson, police said.

Julie Carver, 43, was taken into custody without incident on Thursday afternoon, Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland said.

According to fire investigators, an argument with her boyfriend prompted Carver to set fire to a suitcase containing the man’s clothes on the porch of the house, McCausland said.

The man, who was not injured, was asleep at the time of the 4 a.m. fire.

No other injuries were reported and Indian Township police assisted in the investigation.

Carver is being held at the Washington County Jail.
