CHELSEA, Maine — A local woman suffered serious injuries Thursday when her car was struck by a crane on Route 9, police said.

Sally Gousse, 76, apparently pulled out of her driveway and into the path of the crane, according to Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland.

Eugene Green, 52, of Manchester tried to swerve to avoid a collision with Gousse but struck the driver’s side of her sedan, McCausland said. Green was not injured.

The crane was not damaged but Gousse’s vehicle was destroyed. She was transported by ambulance to MaineGeneral Hospital in Augusta.

Route 9 was closed for an hour following the accident.
