PORTLAND, Maine — The Casco Bay Bridge, a drawbridge which connects Portland with South Portland over the Fore River, was stuck in its up position on the southbound side for approximately a half hour Monday afternoon, according to reports.
Multiple Portland television stations reported that the bridge became stuck between 3 and 3:30 p.m. and stayed that way until just after 4 p.m., when Maine Department of Transportation officials managed to lower it again.
Portland ABC television affiliate WMTW reported that police helped vehicles already on the bridge back off while the problem was being solved, and that other traffic was rerouted during the episode.
It remains unclear what caused the bridge to stick, according to local NBC affiliate WCSH 6.
Calls to the Department of Transportation and Portland officials were not immediately returned.
