PORTLAND, Maine — A lack of evidence and severe damage were factors in crews being unable to determine a cause for a fire that destroyed a Portland apartment building earlier this month.
Fire investigators made several attempts to compile evidence, according to Portland Fire Chief Jerome LaMoria, but the 84 Irving St. building was deemed too dangerous.
“Anyone entering the building does so at their own risk,” LaMoria said. Investigators could never enter the building due to the damage.
The apartment building was destroyed by a three-alarm fire on Jan. 19.
LaMoria said that working smoke detectors in the building likely prevented fatalities from occurring.
No injuries were reported in the fire.
