CHINA, Maine — Two men and a 6-year-old boy escaped injury Thursday when ATV they were on broke through thin ice on China Lake, officials said.
Lucas Cole, 25, plunged into about four feet of water around 8 a.m., according to Game Warden Steven Couture.
Another man, Donald Cowles, was also on the four-wheeler with Cole and the 6-year-old, Cole’s nephew, and Cowles managed to quickly toss the boy out of the water.
Couture said China Lake’s ice is in good condition, and believes a fresh patch of snow from Wednesday’s storm may have covered thin ice which Cole didn’t see.
Alcohol was not a factor in the accident and all three individuals were wearing helmets. Cole, the boy and Cowles were treated at a local hospital for hypothermia and released.
Charges are not expected to be filed in the accident.
