BANGOR, Maine — A water main break near John Bapst High School on Broadway tied up traffic during the morning commute Thursday.

Bangor Water District crews responded to reports of the leak at about 1 a.m., according to district engineer Rick Pershken.

Pershken said the water main that broke is 6 inches in diameter.

At 11 a.m., crews shut off water on Broadway from State to Cumberland streets and Penobscot Street from Broadway to Pine Street for an hour. Water service in those areas was expected to be back on shortly after noon.

John Bapst dismissed its students for the day at 12:15 p.m., according to a statement from the school.

Inbound traffic on Broadway was reduced to one lane while crews worked at the scene, but traffic was back to normal shortly after 3 p.m.
