TURNER, Maine — Three puppies perished and a barn was leveled by a fire here late Monday night, according to officials.

The fire at Varney’s Labs on Fish Street started around 10 p.m., according to Turner Fire Chief Michael Arsenault.

The blaze drew firefighters from five communities to the dog breeding business, Arsenault said.

The business owners’ home, which is next door to the garage, did not get touched by any fire, Arsenault said.

A woodstove was to blame, the chief said. Approximately 33 dogs were inside the barn and 30 managed to escape via dog doors inside kennels, Arsenault said.

Firefighters from Turner, Greene, Buckfield, Livermore Falls and Leeds remained on scene until 3 a.m. Tuesday, Arsenault said.
