BRUNSWICK, Maine — A 25-year-old man with a prior conviction for assault was charged after allegedly assaulting his girlfriend and then taking her phone.
Randel Phillips Jr. of Brunswick was charged with domestic violence assault and obstructing report of a crime, according to Deputy Chief Marc Hagan of the Brunswick Police Department. Bail was set at $10,000.
The domestic violence assault charge was elevated to a Class C felony due to Phillips’ prior conviction.
Officers responded just before 3:30 p.m. Monday to Phillips’ apartment, where a 25-year-old woman had locked herself in the bathroom, according to Hagan. Phillips was attempting to kick in the door, he said.
The woman told police that Phillips was intoxicated and attacked her, slapping her face and causing small cuts to her face and arms, according to Hagan. Phillips then allegedly took her cellphone when she attempted to call police.
Brunswick rescue workers treated the woman at the scene, but she refused to be taken to the hospital.
Phillips also was charged with possession of a usable amount of marijuana.
Phillips remained in Cumberland County Jail on Tuesday morning. He is scheduled to appear in Cumberland County Superior Court on April 22.
