Coach Steve Trimper’s keys to the series: “We need to play better infield defense. This team can swing the bats, but our defense needs to do its part to help get the pitchers off the mound.”

Game notes: The Black Bears open defense of their America East regular-season title against perennial cellar dweller UMBC. UMaine won five of six meetings a year ago. UMaine is batting .293 as a team, but has experienced inconsistency with its pitching and infield defense. The Retrievers dropped two of three to Albany in their league-opening series last weekend. UMBC has received good pitching from its front-line starters, but is batting only .229 while averaging 3.8 runs per contest.
