PORTLAND, Maine — Nine trash bin fires were reported in the downtown area of the city on Saturday night, according to Lt. Gary Hutcheson of the Portland Police Department.

On Monday morning, WGME reported that two people had been detained in connection with the fire.

The reports started coming in around 9 p.m. and continued into the early hours of the morning, Hutcheson said.

No injuries occurred as a result of the fires and Portland’s fire and police departments experienced no complications when extinguishing them.

Hutcheson confirmed that authorities believe this is a case of arson because of the number of fires that were reported around the same time.

The Portland Police Department’s detective bureau is investigate the fires, Hutcheson said.
