SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — Otto Pizza plans to expand again.

After opening its first location in the city at 159 Cottage Road last November, the fast-growing Portland pizza joint has leased space at 125 John Roberts Road, near the Maine Mall.

It will be Otto’s fourth location in Maine, and eighth total — the other four are in Massachusetts.

Co-owner Mike Keon is expected to go before the Planning Board Tuesday night for approval of a special exemption to operate in the space.

According to Community Planner Stephen Puleo, approval would allow Otto to build a prep kitchen for storage of supplies and ingredients, as well as a 36-seat restaurant.

Like Otto’s other locations, the restaurant would provide pizza delivery. But more importantly, it would function as a central delivery location for bringing supplies to locations in Portland. The space on John Roberts Road is around 4,000 square feet, a departure from the chain’s typically smaller locations.

Puleo said he believes the small spaces have been hard to manage, and that the bulk of work done at the location would be prepping ingredients, such as dough. He said the company plans to add lots of refrigeration as well.

“This is going to really help them out in the long run,” he said Friday.

Co-owner Anthony Allen preferred not to comment on the move before seeking approval Tuesday night.
