KITTERY, Maine — A lawsuit filed against a cargo ship that struck a bridge connecting Maine and New Hampshire has been settled for $1.3 million, the Maine Department of Transportation announced Wednesday.

The vessel, the MV Harbour Feature, struck the Sarah Mildred Long bridge spanning the Piscataqua River on April 1, 2013.

Maine and New Hampshire filed a lawsuit in federal court in New Hampshire against the vessel, and both states and the ship settled the claims to cover the costs of repairing the span, according to the MDOT.

The accident substantially damaged the bridge. The MDOT said both states, which split the settlement money evenly, are satisfied with the outcome.
