MONSON, Maine — Fire destroyed a farmhouse on Water Street Monday despite the efforts of five area fire departments to battle the blaze.

The fire at 79 Water Street was reported at 4:15 p.m., according to Monson Fire Chief Eric Melia. The 2½ story structure had flames showing when firefighters arrived on scene. Departments from Sangerville, Guilford, Greenville and Dover-Foxcroft also responded.

“The home is a total loss but we were able to save the barn,” Melia said Tuesday. Firefighters remained at the scene until about 10:30 p.m., according to Melia.

No injuries were reported.

The home is owned by Lloyd Storer. He and his wife were visiting a neighbor at the time the fire was reported, according to Melia. The couple are staying with friends.

Melia said he did not know what caused the fire.
