ELLSWORTH, Maine — A Hancock man accused of robbing a supermarket pharmacy was arrested Tuesday night after he saw a photo of himself posted on the local police department’s Facebook page.

Bruce Wilbur, 23, went to the police station to talk about the photo. He at first denied being involved in the robbery Monday at Shaw’s, but then confessed while being interviewed by police, according to Lt. Harold Page.

“He was charged with Class B robbery and Class C theft,” Page said in an email. “A search warrant was executed later at his residence and evidence was seized but none of the stolen drugs were recovered.”

Wilbur is accused of handing a pharmacy clerk a note that demanded prescription medication around 5 p.m. Monday. His face was partially covered by clothing during the robbery, police have said.

After the robber was given some pills he allegedly ran out, around the back of the store and into the woods. Responding officers tracked him to a nearby apartment complex, where they believe he got into a car with a woman and drove off.

On Monday evening, after the robbery, a pharmacy counter clerk told police he thought the robber had been in the store the previous day. Police went back through the store’s security camera footage and came up with a clear image of Wilbur standing at the pharmacy counter on Sunday as he was buying some syringes.

Police posted the photo on Facebook and indicated that the person in the photo was a suspect in the robbery. Wilbur went to talk to police Tuesday night after seeing the photo.

Police are not releasing information about the type or quantity of drugs Wilbur is accused of taking. They say he never threatened violence but held his hand in his pocket as if he had a weapon.

According to Page, the investigation continues into the accomplice and recovering the drugs.
