CARIBOU, Maine — The City Council has approved the date and time for a special election to fill a vacant seat on the panel, but no candidates applied before the filing deadline.

City Clerk Jayne Farrin explained Tuesday, however, that voters still may write in a candidate on the ballot next June — making certain to fill in the indicator bubble stipulating that a name has been written in.

The winner of last November’s election for the council seat was found ineligible to serve because the candidate’s property taxes were not paid in full before the election. In January, longtime council member Kenneth Murchison was appointed to fill the seat until a new election could be held.

The winner of the special election will get to serve out the term which expires Jan. 1, 2015.

Farrin reminded voters that the candidate written in needs to be a Caribou resident who qualifies under the charter.

“We’ll count the ballots, and if the person who gets the most votes is a Caribou resident, and qualifies under the charter, they will be the winner,” she said.

“If that person chooses not to serve,” Farrin said, the seat “will not go to the second place finisher.”

The election will be Tuesday, June 10, at the Caribou Wellness and Recreation Center. Polls will be open 8 a.m.-8 p.m.
