PORTLAND, Maine — A Lisbon man will spend the next 10 years behind bars on a firearms charge, the U.S. attorney’s office announced Tuesday.

Robert Kelly Carter, 50, also will have three years of supervised release tacked on to the end of his sentence, U.S. Attorney Thomas Delahanty II said.

Carter was sentenced in U.S. District Court on Tuesday by Judge Nancy Torresen. Carter pleaded guilty to a charge of possession of a firearm by a felon in December 2013.

According to court documents, Carter was found to be in possession of a firearm in September while on probation for a 2007 sexual abuse conviction out of Kentucky.

The weapon, a .38 revolver, along with a pistol, were found by his probation officer during a search of Carter’s residence.

Carter also has felony convictions out of Indiana from 2001 and 2004.

Torresen said she imposed the maximum sentence because she believed Carter was a danger to the community, particularly to women with whom he shares personal relationships.
