SOUTH CHINA, Maine — A Windsor woman was seriously injured Monday when the Suzuki she was driving slammed into the rear of a parked school bus on Route 3, police said.

Melissa Guilfoyle, 35, was taken to an undisclosed hospital by LifeFlight helicopter, Chief Deputy Ryan Reardon of the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday.

The Vassalboro School Department bus was unoccupied at the time of the accident, Reardon said.

The chief deputy said Guilfoyle’s vehicle was wedged under the bus so far that firefighters initially couldn’t see inside the vehicle, and a crane had to be used to lift the rear of the bus so rescue workers could extricate Guilfoyle.

Reardon said the accident was reported shortly before 2 p.m., and Route 3 was reduced to one lane for much of the afternoon.

The accident remains under investigation.
