CALAIS, Maine — Calais police are investigating an incident in which a local man was attacked and wounded by another man armed with a hatchet, police said Thursday.

The 19-year-old victim suffered a 1-inch-long cut to a knee in the incident, which took place about 11:30 p.m. on May 2, said Sgt. John Preston. The BDN is not naming the teenager since he is considered a victim.

He told police he was walking on a path near Calais Cemetery when a tall man wearing sneakers grabbed him and swung at him with a hatchet. The victim, who told police he did not recognize the man, was able to break free and flee.

The teen went to the emergency room of Calais Regional Hospital and was treated for his wound and then released, said Preston.
